“The role of control is that the only thing you can control are your thoughts.” - Marisa Peer
MY: How can we mentally overcome fears?
Marisa Peer: Everyone has their own fears and as an experienced therapist, I’ve seen first-hand how fears and phobias can impact all areas of people’s lives. However, the good news is that these fears can be eliminated once and for all using the phenomenal power of your mind.
Fears are rooted in a past trauma or a deeply internalized negative experience. When you can let go of whatever is holding you back, you discover the power within you to achieve freedom from any issue. I created Rapid Transformational Therapy™ (RTT™) to teach people how the mind works and how you can use it to overcome anything.
There are three basic things you need to know about your mind in order to run your mind rather than have your mind run you. I call them the Three Powerful Rules of the Mind:
No one is born with fears. Babies aren't scared of the dark or doctors. Ask yourself, if I wasn't born with this phobia, where could I have gotten it? You may find that you remember or you may not remember consciously, and that’s OK. Just by accepting that we’re not born with fears we can see that they’re acquired and if we acquire them, we can become free of them. This can break the hold that fears and phobias can have.
We acquire phobias and therefore can release phobias, by doing what RTT does:
To overcome any fear or phobia, look at where this could have originated. Look at the language you use and the pictures you form, then choose to dramatically change the words and pictures and make that change familiar. Wire it in by repeating your new beliefs as many times as you can in as many different ways that you can; the more you repeat something, the stronger and more real it becomes. When you do this, you’ll see that you have immense power to get rid of any phobia.
MY: What most often stops people from reaching their goals?
MP: The number one thing stopping you from achieving your goals is yourself! Just as you have the biggest potential on the planet, you can also be the biggest blocker of your own success. Whether you’re consciously aware of it or not, your beliefs, mindset, and attitudes shape your life. First you make your beliefs and then your beliefs make you. When you understand that your thoughts create your reality, you can change your thoughts and change your life. It’s not outside influences or external factors that affect us, but how we respond to them that matters. You can’t control anything external to you, but you can control your thinking.
When you control your thoughts you can change your life. This is because your thoughts control your feelings, your feelings control your actions, and your actions control your events. So, when you take control of your thoughts, it changes your entire life. When you make your thoughts positive it makes your life positive. What's so amazing is that it starts out as what you do, but then becomes who you are.
Begin to think of your mind as a goal-seeking laser. Just as it listens to the words and pictures you tell yourself to know how you are, it also loves to have concrete goals to work towards. The more specific you can make these, the better. Choose to do something every day that takes you closer to your goals, even if it’s just 5-10 minutes a day. This practice will make you feel like a winner and move you towards your desires. Always remember that what you want, wants you. What you’re moving towards is moving towards you.
