Not Your Average Easter Eggs
Springtime crafting just has a certain something about it. Decorative flower garlands, garden boxes, May Day baskets… there's so much to enjoy inside and outside. And with the sun shining down and temperatures starting to climb, Easter makes for an egg-cellent tradition to kick off seasonal DIYs with fun pastels and annual activities. Let’s start with a classic — decorating eggs! Delight in this craft with friends and family, but try mixing it up with some not-so-average techniques. We’ve curated three unique and easy ways to make Easter eggs your own. Try these crafts with the littles in your life or bring the supplies along to the grandparents’ for a family get-together. Once you’ve decorated, display on egg stands, in cartons or baskets, or within a tablescape. Then break them open and indulge (if using food grade coloring) or leave them be for all to see.
Hard-Boiled Eggs
ingredients:
- 1 dozen eggs
- Water
directions:
- Place eggs in a saucepan and immerse in cold water.
- Cover and bring water to a boil, then turn off the heat.
- Let eggs stand in the covered pan for 12-15 minutes.
- Run cold water over the eggs when the timer goes off.
- When cooled, drain and refrigerate eggs.
Crown Eggs
what you'll need:
- Hard-boiled eggs
- 5 in. string
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Fake small leaf branches (available in most craft stores)
- Thin wire
- Sharp scissors
- Fine tip Sharpie marker
directions:
- Wrap string around top of egg to desired size for crown. Cut string to this length and measure with a ruler. Take branch of leaves and measure lengths for each crown and cut.
- Holding branch with leaves in circle, wrap the thin wire around the two branch ends to secure together.
- Then wrap wire like a coil around the full branch to maintain the crown shape and wrap tightest at connecting point. Cut and remove excess wire.
- Using the Sharpie, draw a face on the egg.
Emoji Eggs
what you'll need:
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Yellow acrylic paint
- Black, white, red, blue, and pink paint pens
- Small paint brushes
directions:
- Paint a coat of yellow over the eggs and allow to dry.
- Using inspiration from the emojis, draw different faces on each egg. You can sketch with pencil first or dive in with paint pens. Be creative! Use blue for tears, red for love, pink for tongues, white for eyes and teeth, and black for other details. Make one for everyone at your Easter table.
Pastel Eggs
what you'll need:
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Food coloring
- White vinegar
- Hot water
- Small bowls (one per color)
- Spoons (one per color)
- Tongs or slotted spoon
- Pastel paint (optional)
- Small paint brushes (optional)
- Rubber bands (optional)
- String (optional)
- Stamps and stamp ink (optional)
- Stickers or rhinestones (optional)
directions:
- Select colors you would like to use and place a small amount of each food coloring in its own bowl.
- Add 1 Tbsp. of white vinegar and 1 cup hot or boiling water to each bowl and stir.
- Place one egg at a time in a color’s bowl and stir to ensure even color. Let each egg sit about 3-5 minutes. The color will be more vibrant if it has time to soak up.
- Remove the eggs from the bowls with tongs or slotted spoons and place on paper towel to dry.
customize:
- Paint small polka dots of different colors on eggs instead of or in addition to dyeing.
- Wrap rubber bands around your eggs or string and tie tightly so they criss cross before you dye your eggs for an interesting effect.
- Paint meaningful or fun words on solid colored eggs or stamp letters or patterns.
- Decorate with stickers or rhinestones for extra personality.
Notes: You can use disposable bowls or spoons if preferred. Additionally, while we love the look of all these creaitve ideas, please keep in mind it is not safe to consume non food grade colored eggs.
