cozy
Interior spaces are often shared with mixed purpose. Think about it. The kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and common space; the list goes on relative to our own unique floor plans. But what about a space to call your own, even if quite small? A space that is as coordinated as it is eclectic, and as attractive as it is useful. These are the spaces that tend to be the most inviting, as they’re areas in which we can relax and surround ourselves with the things we love, while simplifying the mind’s eagerness to think too much. This time of year, we introduce the cozy nook, set away from the noise and stresses which can sometimes linger in the busier areas of our living space. Even if you live alone, you can benefit from something dedicated and not multipurpose. The best part about a nook being a space for self-care is that it can be built to include items that make you feel your best and disclude anything that does not.
Sometimes, getting started on a project like creating this nook, or comfort space, can be stressful unto itself. Fortunately, Sabrina Speer of D2 Interiors breaks down 10 important elements to making an inviting and accessorized cozy winter nook. These elements are a foundation from which to individualize your space. Remember, self-care looks different for everyone. Remove or add items based upon what tickles your fancy.
An obvious start and non-negotiable. Can you be cozy without being comfy? Certainly not. Here, the chaises are from Cisco Home (ciscohome.net). Everything they make is comfortable, local, and green. I recommend investing in well-made seating and saving money elsewhere.
Down pillows are a must. They make all the difference in comfort and you can mold them to your body while you nap!
The options for blankets are endless. If I knew how to knit, I would make one of those chunky throws to feel a sense of accomplishment when curling up with it. I instead, purchased two blankets from HomeGoods and paired them with a vintage Suzani. Hand-embroidered vintage Suzanis are infused with character and are often made for a bride and groom (great gift idea!).
If possible, create your nook near a window, as studies show that exposure to natural light is mood-boosting. In Southern California, this may mean an open window. In colder geographies, this may mean your window is closed, yet creates a similar effect with a view of the outdoors, such as a fresh snowfall. In either case, that chunky blanket is put to good use.
Just like the view to the outdoors, surrounding yourself with plants and flowers will elevate your mood and can even lower your blood pressure. Plants will also improve your perception of the space. Certain plants can even help detoxify the air, which comes in handy if you're spending more time indoors this season.
You may prefer tea or coffee, but if you’re going all-in on creating a relaxing moment, try something you don’t have every day. Maybe a hot cider, or my personal favorite, Mexican hot chocolate. I look for handmade ceramics on trips to add to my mug collection, so when I use it, it reminds me of a special time.
This should not need an explanation. Enjoy!
A good read is a way to soak up the entire experience and stay a while. Some book recommendations of mine include "Homegoing," "A Man Called Ove," and "The Great Alone." At the very least, you can imagine snow if you can’t see it out your window. Additionally, make a beautiful photo album you can enjoy by flipping through. It’s one way to enliven the photos from your phone — try Artifact Uprising (artifactuprising.com).
Art is always subjective, so go with what you like. In a former life, I used to dress up as princesses and entertain children for birthday parties. Now, I’m married with children. “Snowy,” by Dina Goldstein, immediately made me laugh and it felt very personal. It amuses me and lets me discover something new each time I look at it.
The most powerful sense is the sense of smell. Smells correlate with memory and therefore, the perfect last touch to making the nook specifically yours is to light a candle that reminds you of happiness. Warm and fuzzies are promised.
